William Spencer Herring, Sr., 94, of Richmond Hill, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

William was born on April 7, 1932, to James and Janie Herring. He spent most of his life in Savannah, Georgia, where he developed a deep love for the South Georgia coast. He found joy in boating, fishing, crabbing, and simply soaking up the sunshine along the water he loved so much.

William worked as a roofer in his family's business before beginning a long and dedicated career with the Georgia Ports Authority, where he worked for 33 years after starting in 1961.

In 1949, William married the love of his life, Susie McDonald Earley Herring, in Ridgeland, South Carolina. Family lore says they may have stretched the truth a little about their ages to make the marriage happen — a story that became part of the laughter and love they shared throughout their lives together. Together, they built a life centered on family and raised three children.

William was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Susie Herring; his son, Michael Herring, Sr.; and his granddaughter, Rebeka Perry.

Known lovingly as "Pop" to generations of family, William is survived by his son, William "Doc" Herring, Jr., and his daughter, Janet (Jimmy) Reid. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: James (Katie) Reid, Jon Reid, Jessica (Max) Smith, Michael (Rachel) Herring, and Adam Herring; as well as his great-grandchildren, James Herring, Christian Herring, Harper Herring, Alexandra Reid, Jonathan Reid, Elowen Smith, Rowan Smith, Adelyn Smith, Griffin Smith, and Emma Reid, who is expected soon.

William also leaves behind his faithful four-legged sidekick, Remington ("Batman"), who shared a morning banana with him each day.

A visitation will be held at Richmond Hill Funeral Home on Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 11:00 a.m.-12:00p.m. A graveside service will follow on Monday, May 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah.
