It is with a heavy heart that the family of "Smaro" Huddleston announces her passing peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, January 20, 2024.

The Athens, Greece native born August 26, 1929 and longtime resident of North Charleston, South Carolina was the treasured wife of Richard Franklin Huddleston and adored Mother of Jay, Demetrius and George.

Smaragda was an honest, hard-working and out-spoken woman who was loved by many. When she wasn't teaching Greek at The College of Charleston as an Adjunct Professor, she was (in typical Greek-Mother fashion) sharing her love of feeding people with her World Famous Huddleston Hot Dog carts in downtown Charleston, South Carolina; but she was most passionate about her family and giving everything she had to ensure their success and making them feel loved.

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, her son Jay and her son George.

She is survived by her loving son, Demetrius Huddleston and her daughter-in-law Gina Caraviello of Savannah, Georgia, her two grand-children Zoe Huddleston (Andrés Wewer) of Portland, Oregon and Jasper Huddleston of Savannah, Georgia; plus several nieces, nephews and cousins in Athens, Greece.

The family would like to express their deep and sincere gratitude to her doctors, nurses and care-givers for the kind and loving care she received throughout her illness at Bryan County Health and Rehab in Richmond Hill, Georgia. She was everyone's YiaYia there and they treated her as such. Thank you all for the compassion, care and the multitude of cheek kisses given.

A very special thank you to Dr. Lisa Ciucevich for her unwavering care, support and love for Smaragda and to our whole family over the last 10 years.

Smaragda will be laid to rest at a private service at Riverview Memorial Park in North Charleston, South Carolina at a later date.
