Modesto Gutierrez, originally of Hayward, California, first came to Georgia in the late 1960s as a young enlisted man, recently married. He and his wife Janet would joke that it was their first overseas tour together, and that their dog barked with a southern accent. But the army, and then later retirement, kept bringing them back to Georgia, and they finally settled for good in Richmond Hill in 2003.

Modesto was an avid fisherman, talented painter, and aspiring guitar player. He loved good food, travel, the books of PG Wodehouse, and puttering around his veggie & Japanese gardens. His last great big adventure was visiting a live volcano in southern Japan over Christmas.

He was much loved by his family, and his humor and creativity will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by a daughter, April, who hopes he has gone on to greater adventures with his beloved wife, who passed away last year.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, February 27, 2020 at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, GA.  Visitation will be held Thursday, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Richmond Hill Funeral Home.
