Michael Gilmore, 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Richmond Hill on August 7th 2024.

Mike was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and was the son of Mr. Arthur Gilmore and Lillian Gilmore.

Mike leaves behind his loving wife of thirty-nine years Marguerite (Margie) Gilmore, and was a devoted father to five children, daughter Tracy Gilmore, son, Shawn Gilmore, daughter Dawn Gilmore Parker (husband Hillyer Parker), daughter Shannon Gilmore Greika and son William (Billy) Walters (wife Pamela Walters).  Mike enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Gage Gilmore (wife Sarah Lemaux), Kevin Walters, Ashley Walters Robertson (husband Zachary Robertson), Isabel Greika, Dolan Greika, and Madelyn Greika.

Mike is also survived by his older sister Gail Gilmore Kemp and nephew Terry Kemp.

After graduating from Plattsburgh High School in 1957, Mike attended State University of New York (SUNY) Plattsburgh earning a bachelor's degree in education.  Mike's passion for service was evident early as he joined the United States Marine Corps as a commissioned officer in 1962 where he served two tours in Vietnam ('67-'69) and earned thirty-eight air service commendations as a combat helicopter pilot.  Mike was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps as Captain Gilmore in 1970.  Mike continued his love of flight by joining Delta Airlines where he flew thousands of passengers for thirty years.

Upon his retirement in 1999, Mike decided to retain his captain's title on his 38' catamaran sailing vessel, Margueritaville, along with his loving First Mate for life, Margie, as they routinely sailed with family and friends along the Atlantic coastline, around the Caribbean and Greek Isles.  When the winds weren't favorable to fill their sails, Margie had Mike either piloting a canoe on many adventurous trips in northeast Georgia or jumping on a jet to Europe where they created so many wonderous memories.

Mike's service wasn't limited to his country, his passengers, or his family as he also served in the choir at the Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church.

Family and friends will always regard "Capt. Mike", as a caring, honorable, and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-arms, and friend to all who were blessed to have known him.

On Saturday, August 17th, a brief visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 pm followed by a memorial service at 2:00pm Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church.

The family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association in lieu of flowers for those interested in doing so.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church with visitation one hour prior to the service.

Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
