Mary Frances Lane Meeks, age 93, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2025, at home following a long illness. Mrs. Meeks was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Walter Watson Meeks, Jr., who died April 3, 2013.

She is survived by two sons, Walter "Buck" Watson Meeks III and John Harold Meeks (Jo Ann), both of Richmond Hill, GA; and four grandchildren: Mary Elizabeth Meeks (Tom) of Pooler; John "Beau" Harold Meeks Jr. (Amy), Evan Lane Meeks, and Lewis Guerrin Williams Meeks, all of Richmond Hill, GA.

Mrs. Meeks was also predeceased by one sister, Julia Anne Lane Stewart (George), and three brothers: Richard Eugene Lane (Linda), Joseph Matthew Lane, Jr. (Jerry), and Dr. William Kelvin Lane, Sr. (Rachel). She is survived by her sisters Dorthy Joe Lane Bean (Elbert) of Ashburn and
Emma Janis Lane Hess (Peter) of East Aurora, New York.

The eldest of seven children, Mrs. Meeks was born to the late Joseph Matthew Lane, Sr. and Emily Dorothy Lewis Lane in Alma, GA, on November 17, 1932. Her family soon relocated to Rebecca, Georgia, where she grew up on the family farm. She graduated with honors from Rebecca High School and continued her education, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from the University of Georgia, and later both her Master's and Specialist in Education degrees (M.Ed., Ed.S.) from Armstrong State College.

She taught in Cartersville, GA; El Paso, TX; Anchorage, AK; and Richmond Hill, GA. Her love of education grew from a career spanning over 55 years and included teaching at every grade level. During this time, she worked as a classroom teacher, school food service director, assistant
principal, and principal. Ever active in retirement, Mrs. Meeks served two terms as Vice Chairman of the Bryan County Board of Education (2000–2008).

Lovingly referred to as "Bryan County's First Lady of Education," she was known for her unshakable dedication to the public school system and her relentless drive to provide the best possible educational opportunities for the children of Bryan County. In 2019, the Bryan County Board of Education named its newest facility Frances Meeks Elementary School in her honor. One of her key themes, "Bloom Where You're Planted," adorns the foyer and was often used as a source of encouragement to her students, staff, and faculty.

In addition to her love of education, Mrs. Meeks was a member and Elder of Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church, Charter President of the Richmond Hill Garden Club, and President of Bryan- Evans Retired Educators, among many other contributions to a growing community.

Those who knew Mrs. Meeks remember how she loved and cherished all her family and friends, and her commitment to the success of her colleagues in education and especially her students and their parents.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m.–8 p.m. at Richmond Hill Funeral Home on Friday, December 12th 2025. Funeral services will be held at Richmond Hill Presbyterian on Saturday, December 13th 2025 at 10a.m. Interment will follow at Burnt Church Cemetery on Hwy 144, east of Richmond Hill.

Mrs. Meeks's fondest wish is that the community plant trees and flowers in her memory and generously support the Richmond Hill Historical Society.
