Evelyn Sue Hertig Curry, 87, of Richmond Hill, passed away Saturday, October 17, 2020 at Bryan County Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in 1932 in Marlinton, WV, she was the daughter of the late Oscar Moritz Hertig and late Flossie
Helen Hoover Hertig.
Evelyn was raised in the hills of West Virginia in Pocahontas County. She went to Marshall University in
Huntington, WV where she met her future husband, Bob Curry. Evelyn and Bob often disagreed on the
exact location on the Marshall campus where they met but they did agree it was on the grounds of
Marshall. Bob joined the navy and came home on leave to get married. After they married, they moved
to Arlington, VA where Evelyn transferred to George Washington University to finish her journalism
degree. During this time in Arlington, they had their first born, Samuel R. "Sam" Curry II.
After her husband left the navy, they moved to Holden, WV where Kimberly Curry was born. They
weren't huge fans of living in Holden and soon re-located to Parkersburg, WV where their youngest
Susan Curry was born. In 1965, they moved to Elmira, NY where they lived for 9 years with great
memories and friends.
In 1974, they returned to West Virginia where they lived in Milton and could see elderly family
members. In 1986, they moved to Savannah, GA and more specifically, Wilmington Island for 30 years.
Evelyn was a member of Wilmington Island United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for many
years.
After Bob passed away, Evelyn eventually re-located to Richmond Hill, GA to Magnolia Manor Assisted
Living and eventually Bryan County Rehabilitation where she became a member of Richmond Hill
Methodist Church. Mom loved her family at Bryan County Rehab and enjoyed being there. She was
their "Purple Princess" and often sang for people.
Evelyn loved animals, particularly cats, and any animal in her care usually ended up plump because of
excessive treats. She also loved shopping and going out to eat and often could be heard saying "you
need to treat yourself!"
Evelyn worked at various jobs through the years including in Washington, DC – National Institute of
Science, Barboursville, WV - American Bankers, in Savannah, GA - M&M Grocery, Gottleibs Bakery, and Senior Community Employment.
She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel Robert "Bob" Curry and a granddaughter, Jericka Curry.
Evelyn is survived by children, Samuel R. Curry II, Kimberly Furbish (Gary) and Susan Curry Brun (Steve)
and grandchildren, Graham Fleener (Elizabeth), Sarah Stone (Carson), Ann Robinson (Jake), Zechariah
Curry, Cheetara Curry, Jardus Curry (Tabitha), Jasper Brun and Kiffin Brun, and her great-grandchildren, Dillon Robinson, Hannah Robinson, Connor Robinson, Skyler Stone, Sophie Stone, Olivia Fleener, Sapphire Lizarraga, Oswen Bley, Annessa Engelbrekston, Zoey Curry, Lucas Curry, Zephaniah Curry .
Funeral services are on Friday, October 23, 2020 at Richmond Hill Methodist Church. Visitation is at
10:00 a.m. and services at 11:00 a.m. Those attending are encouraged to wear purple, her favorite
color.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wilmington Island United Methodist Church choir,
Marshall University or The Greater Savannah Humane Society.
