Angus H McLeod Jr.

Angus Homer McLeod Jr., 83, of Richmond Hill, Georgia, passed away peacefully surrounded by his children and his dear friend Donna Jones on September 16, 2026.

Born on August 14, 1943, in Charleston, West Virginia, Angus was the son of the late Angus Homer McLeod Sr. and Dorothy Shugart McLeod. Angus lived life largely. He loved his family, his community, a good story, and the history woven into the places and people around him. He had a particular love for the rivers and ocean and for the rich history of Richmond Hill, a community he called home and loved deeply.

A local historian at heart, Angus was always ready to share a piece of Richmond Hill’s history with anyone willing to listen. And when Angus told a story, the details may not have always been 100 percent fact, but they were always 100 percent Angus. He was an excellent storyteller, and the stories he told, the laughter he brought, and the history he worked to preserve will remain part of his legacy.

Angus served his country for four years in the United States Navy, including service during the Vietnam War. He attended college and went on to build a career in real estate. His love for Richmond Hill extended well beyond his work. He cared deeply about the life and character of his community, helped build and establish the local Republican Party, and was instrumental in starting the Richmond Hill Farmers Market. His involvement in Richmond Hill reflected a lifelong desire to invest in the community and people he called home.

When he wasn’t sharing a story or a piece of local history, Angus could often be found enjoying some of his favorite things. He loved hunting and fishing, was an avid NASCAR fan, and had a deep appreciation for the waterways and natural beauty of the place he called home.

Above all, Angus leaves behind a family who knew and loved the larger-than-life man behind all of those stories.

He is survived by his wife, Gretchen Whittle McLeod; his daughter and devoted caregiver, Gretchen McLeod Mulling, her husband, Michael Patrick Mulling, and their children, Eidson Mulling and Charlie Mulling; his son, John Angus McLeod, his wife, Chelsea Elizabeth McLeod, and their children, Jasper McLeod and Jude McLeod; and his sister, Mary McLeod Council, and her husband, Chris Council.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Angus Homer McLeod Sr. and Dorothy Shugart McLeod.

Angus also leaves behind many dear and treasured friends, some of whom became much like family through the years. The family would especially like to recognize Donna Jones, who held a special place in Angus’ life and faithfully remained by his side, providing loving care and companionship through his final days. His gift for friendship, conversation, and storytelling gave him a way of making connections wherever he went, and there are countless people whose lives are richer for having known him.

Angus loved life largely, and he leaves behind a lifetime of stories. Some were history, some may have grown a little in the telling, but every one of them was unmistakably Angus.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Church of the Hill, 9050 Ford Ave. #3640, Richmond Hill, Georgia 31324. Visitation will be held from 2:00–3:00 p.m., followed by the service from 3:00–4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richmond Hill Historical Society, honoring Angus’s love for the history and community he spent so much of his life celebrating.
