Alexander Martin Thompson, 85, of Savannah, Georgia, passed away peacefully at home on April 22, 2026. Born on February 8, 1941, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to Bernice "Tommy" Thompson and Lucy Thompson, Alex grew up on Hawthorne Road in Ardmore where his love for family and athletics took root.

After graduating from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1959, he played baseball at Wingate and Guilford Colleges, carrying with him the spirit of teamwork and dedication. Following college, Alex played countless rounds of golf in his temporary hometowns of Statesville, North Carolina, and Richmond, Virginia, before eventually settling back in Winston-Salem.

Alex's steadfast support for his family was unwavering – never missing a game or recital. Known for his quiet and gentle nature, Alex was often the calm voice amid lively family gatherings, quietly raising his hand to share a word or two. Alex's love extended beyond family to his cherished Tar Heels, golf, time at the beach, a quiet game of solitaire – all made better with a Miller Lite or cocktail in hand.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernice "Tommy" Thompson and Lucy Lentz Thompson. Alex is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Susan Raymond Thompson; his children Lynn (Mark) Smith, Mark (Laura) Thompson, Jill Hunt (the late Michael Parker) Parker, Holly Hunt (Trip) Kolkmeyer, and Jeff (Jennifer) Thompson; and his treasured grandchildren Liam, Hannah, Logan, Wyatt, and Reece.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to Hospice Savannah for their care and support of Alex and Susan. In accordance with his wishes, Alex was cremated, and a private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests honoring his memory by buying a lottery ticket—a small tribute to one of his simple joys.
